Now everything I just typed could be the exact opposite of what Valerie Laken was trying to get across in her beautifully written book, but it’s what I took away from it and I’m very happy that I was given the chance to read it. Instead, we get a book about a house and the “ghosts” within its walls, and four characters with skeletons in their closet. Dream House, her debut novel, started out relatively slow. So of course he wouldn’t want their life to change in any real way, because if it did, she may realize that she’s moved beyond him.

I dunno it was just a three star book.

The novel also has crazy obvious symbolism – broken house, broken relationships. I love novels that blend past and present events and how it all comes together in the now and Ms. Houde when Kate throws uouse into remodeling the home, he never wanted, he feels her pulling away from him. I was very happy to have read Dream House houuse will definitely be on the lookout for any other titles from Valerie Laken.

She does not relate well to Stuart or her well-to-do glossy family.

A young couple purchases an old house in gentrifying Ann Arbor, Michigan, Ianna!! The only complaint came from Entertainment Weeklywhich found fault with the main characters. I didn’t love it but I didn’t slog through it either. She lets it dry, some parts are ruined, but that’s it – we never hear of her trying to get it read or anything after that. But it got creepy, that two people that had such horrific experiences in the house ended up helping Kate rehab it.


After 18 year old Walker Price kills his widowed mother’s abusive hojse drug addled boyfriend, he is sent to prison for the next decade and a half. The downfall in the writing is that there are themes and subplots in the first half of the novel that are totally forgotten in the second half, some of them having received so much attention early fream that you can’t help but feel that the author just got bored of them and moved on.

Book review: Valerie Laken’s *Dream House*

Within Walker’s story I found the haunting side of the tale. Dream House is a riveting debut novel that tells the story of a domestic drama that will forever change the lives of two families.

It is the valerid of Jay who was deeply affected by the house after being on the clean-up crew following the murder. Jay is artistic, easy going, but emotionally lost.

Instead they discover vxlerie their home was the scene of a terrible crime many years ago—a revelation that tips the balance of their precarious union.


The circumstances that led to it becoming illegible valerrie just stupid. It is an intricate one, weaving past and present, rage and restoration into a fascinating mosaic of conflicted emotions. She would find out that she would be better off without him.

Unable to do some of the work on her own, and with Stuart absent from the project, Kate hires a local man by the name of Walker Price, who seems to have a particular interest in the gentrified neighborhood, its history and, specifically, Kate’s house I read it in about a day and a half because it was so hard to put down. Dream House is a memorable debut novel from a fully mature talent.
