Booting in safe mode I uninstalled the Intel drivers, then rebooted safe again and removed all system devices related to ICH8 in device manager, Rebooted in IDE mode to safe boot and allowed Windows to detect the IDE devices, then enble again and in safe mode with device set to AHCI allowed Windows to detect them again.

Shouldn’t the interface msahci.syss be a “one-shot-deal”? This issue affects only the boot drive. You may want to install the Intel RST package the normal way now to get all software from it.
Last edited by bkilty21; at How to disable ahci mode in windows 8. Killed ’em all off last summer. It enablf be nice to be able to use all the features and benefits of the SSD. The first step is to determine the manufacturer of your storage controller, or at least motherboard chipset. For Intel, it should be manually extracted from the installer package.

But if I needed to do it as a utility to convert drives to vhd’s, I would consider a dual boot, with the AHCI disabled boot just a simple OS with whatever utilities I needed msahco.sys get the job done.
